Hi,
I've a Dell Inspiron 5150 running Win XP.
Recently XP refused to boot ( C:Windows/System32/config missing), and so I've ended up reinstalling XP from the disk provided from Dell.
I then had to re-install most of the drivers from original CD's etc.
Finally I went to connect to the internet to download SP2/ AVG etc and Windows simply won't release the IP address.
The answer? Reinstall windows again I've been told - but before I do that I've noticed that nearly 55GB of space is 'used' on my C: drive.
Is it possible my original data ( Docs/ Desktop files/ Outlook contacts etc) are still present??
If so how do I go about recovering them?
Tks.

When you reinstall Windows XP, it should leave the "Documents and Settings" folder as it was, so all your old data should still be there. Only the "Windows" directory is affected by a reinstall.

Damo...
Yes, your files should be recoverable by using data recovery software. If you haven't done so already, stop using the machine to ensure files aren't overwritten.
I would strongly reccomend you check our the software products Ontrack Data Recovery (www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/file-recovery-software/) offers, as they have several options depending upon the type and number of files you're looking to recover. There is a free trial of the software and will show you all the files that can be recovered, so before you spend any money, you'll be able to see if the software will recover the specific files you want.
Good luck getting your files back! |
