WD PCB with same DCM but different firmware?

Hi,

I have a WD Laptop HDD - WD1600BEVS-00RST0 which has died (part of the PCB has burnt, drive still powers up and no ticking noises)

I believe the 00RST0 is the firmware version.

I have found another HDD, 160GB with same Drive Configuration Model (DCM) and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) numbers, but different firmware (60RST0).

I have heard that WD Laptop drives have the firmware on the disk itself. If I swap the PCB what firmware will the drive use? Will the drive work?

No, the ROM information that lives on the PCB will not match the drive and you will get nothing. You need a way to move the ROM contents from one PCB to the other.
