Hi,

I have a disk from an old machine which were trashed. The disk is "20 GB - Seagate Model ST320014A". I pulled the disks out a longtime ago. Now I want to retrieve the data on this disk. Where do I start?

I got rid of all my desktop systems at home for about 3 years now and my main computer is a laptop. With this in mind, how do I power the disk, read/retrieve the disk contents? What kind of tools do I need?

Thank you in advance for any help.

Hey,
Your problem conveys that your disk has been corrupted/damaged and now you want all your corrupted or lost disk data files back..If that is the case then I can suggest you where to start from..
Go for one professional and reputated good data recovery software which can retrieve the disk contents effectively..

As this is an old drive, the first step is to check the health of the drive.
If you are not willing to go for any professional data recovery company, then hook that drive to another computer.

In your case you have laptop, so you have to use USB case to convert the drive into USB drive. The drive will get power from USB case. One more thing, this drive you have is IDE drive, so you have to get USB for IDE drive.

If you don't have such USB case, then the second option will be to connect the drive with a desktop which in your case is also not there.

When the drive is connected, you have to check the health of the drive.
If the drive is detected and the data is there in health format, then you don't need any data recovery or data recovery software, however if the desired data is not there, then you can download any free data recovery software to recovery data.
If you cann't see the partition in which your data used to reside, then you have to download any good data recovery software which has partition scan, so you have to look for partition first, then data in it.

But whatever you do, if you want to get your data back, first thing is to make sure that you don't perform any data writing process on the drive from which data is to be reterived.
