Hi guys/girls,
I'm stuck and would really appreciate some help big time!
I spent all night putting together a letter which I finished of this morning.
I went to cut and paste the folder which contains the letter and many others, on to a Maxell 4gb usb stick, transfered this to my printer-linked lappy to print off.
I went to open the 'letters' folder which had been transferred to the mem stick, but it is empty, there are no documents inside it!! Where have they gone???
I opened MS word and used the open recent documents feature, but word says it can't find the directory!!
Obviously because it was supposed to transfer that folder across to the mem stick....
I put a lot into writing that letter and I need to get it back so I can print it!
Please help me find out how to get it back guys, where did the data go???
I have left my desktop and lappy turned on and will keep checking back in here throughout the day in case anyone can help out.
If anyone really wants to make a big difference in someones life today, then please help me get that letter back...
Thanks so much in advance...
Steve

Hi,
Well, what happened in your case is that you used cut to move the folder and during the transfer the process was interrupted or the destination drive on which data was being moved was unplugged during transfer.
I personally had to face such a situation once.
The answer for you will be that better look for the file on the system you were working as there might be some temp file saved by MS-Word.
Also the original folder containing file will be present on the disk if it is not overwritten.
What I will recommend is not to use the drive any more.
Take it out and connect it with some other computer to recover data.
Download any good data recovery software, and scan for data.
you better download that software which has search feature in it.
Once the software is working, just search the data with your file name.
Otherwise you can search using time....last modified....or set any date limit. It will make your task easy.
Otherwise you can download any raw recovery software, run the software and use .doc or .docx format to scan for data then manually look in all file to find your needed file.
Best of Luck and hope that you find you data.
Cheers

Hi Vicky,
Thanks for the feedback!
I managed to get my folder back thankfully.
For anyone having the same problem as me on vista home premium edition, I found this cracking bit of software that lets you access the 'Shadow copy' file on Vista. It is already built in to vista business and ultimate editions I believe, unfortunately not on the home edition.
Anyway here is a link to the free software ShadowExplorer:
shadowexplorer.com
And a good tutorial here on how to use it:
howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/recover-files-with-shadow-copies-on-any-version-of-windows-vista/
Thanks again! |
