My (fairly) new laptop had a problem with the hdd which meant the manufacturers supplied a replacement hdd. Everything works ... good.
However, I still have the failed hdd and wonder if I can get any data back from it.
I've installed the hdd in a usb caddy and am able to see that the drive was split into two partitions but only one of them is visible; the d:/ RECOVERY drive. The c:/ partition (with all the data, files, etc) does not appear.
If I examine the drive with Partition Magic the drive shows as an amorphous whole
Is there a way of repairing the c:/ partition or other means so I can retrieve the files that are there?

If you want to get your data, don't use the drive from which you have lost data as destination of recovered data.
Your problem seems to be simple.
You can look for any data recovery software.
You can try Geeksnerds Data Recovery Software, it will show you the data present on the disk in case of logical data loss, secondly you can search the relevant files using the search functionality of the software, which will save you from trouble of manually looking for each file you need
