Hi,
Which operating system are you using, for windows xp, vista and 7, if you run windows restore provided by microsoft, it will effect your installed utilities and applications but data remians safe.
However what you can do for data recovery is that you should take this hard drive and hook it with some other computer as slave over IDE, SATA or USB.
Then install any good data recovery software on that other computer, Scan the drive for data, in demo version most of the software show you your recoverable data.
Only that data can be recoverd which is not overwritten and in your case most of data should be safe.
Check and validate your data before recovery. If you can't find you data, try looking for it path unknown folder or some other folder as well.
Also if you cant find your data and you are looking for files of one type, you can use raw recovery, in raw recovery software look for header so file system doesnot have any role to play in raw reocvery.
Regards
Vicky.
