I'm a PC tech. I have the occassional customer that messes up their PCs and they pay us to restore. I always tell them it's not our specialty. I'm not an expert at restoring, but I'll do my best.
The way I restore normally is I pull the drive and hook it up to an external usb attachment so I'm not running from the drive, then I use xxcopy to copy everything to a good drive using switches to have it ignore errors.
There are services out there that if you format over the drive 10 times, pour gas on the drive and then ignite it, then drive over it with a semi, they still could probably get the data back. How do they do it? Is there a good article somewhere I could read as to how they do it and how they get the knowledge to have the best success rate of recovery with the smallest chance of perminantly destorying the data?

The labs do any combination of 3 things. If the drive is working (heads can read the sectors) they use software to scan and retrieve the data. Sometimes there is a firmware problem which involves more that I can post, but it breaks down to writing to certain areas of the disk that the operating system can not access. If it is a head problem, or a scratched platter (or both, they tend to come in pairs if the head goes bad and scratches the platter) they put new heads on the drive and try to calibrate them so they are as far away from the platter as they can get while still reading the data. This tends to take a long time (days to weeks) and is usually expensive. It is definitely not something you should try as the platters can become misaligned and ten no data recovery company I know of will be able to recover the data.

| There are some serious errors, like STOP error is also known as Blue Screen of Death, in system that causes system unbootable and unresponsive due to that you are unable to access the data. So to avoid risk of data loss, you need to download data recovery software for free and recover your lost data from the inaccessible drive then do any operation on the drive to fix the error. |
