I have a 500G Hammer Morespace that is less than a year old (still under warranty) and at random it started to malfunction.
I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 Laptop that came with Vista on it. I used the hard drive while it was running Vista. Recently I reformatted to Windows XP Pro and the hard drive still worked with it for a few days and then randomly stopped working.
It still lights up when I plug it in, but after a few seconds it starts clicking and doesn't stop. Plus, the computer doesn't recognize it at all.
I can't open it up without voiding the warranty and I'd definitely like to save that money, but I really want to try to salvage the data I had on it (tons).
Is there anything I can try besides going to a data recovery service? It's so expensive and I'm broke.
Thanks!

Before trying any do it yourself data recovery technique, the first thing is to ensure that you don't experiment on drive with data otherwise there are more chances of losing data rather then recovering it.
Secondly what I will suggest is that if the drive is detected in BIOS, go for a good drive cloning software, just clone the drive onto another healthy drive and experiment on the clone not the original.
Also you can go to the dealer and tell them that the drive is not working, may be they allow you to get the drive repaired by a professional before claiming warranty. But whatever you do, don't experiment on the drive with data.

The drive doesn't show up in BIOS. Sadly.
I emailed Hammer earlier, hoping they'd help me out, but basically they just wanted me to send it in for a new one. And they told me not to tamper with it physically. |

well, you can try any local vendor of hammer, otherwise the decision will be your, either you want data or you want new drive.
In case you opt for data, you have to consult data recovery services provider cuz the drive seems to have developed some physical error |

| Ok so, I took it out of its case and after beating it up a little. I got it to start functioning. The computer recognized that something was attached, but was unable to find any software for it. It didn't come with a disk, and the hammer site doesn't have any drivers. What should my next step be?? |

How are you trying to connect the drive to the computer.
Check Whether the drive is detected in device manager, if so then try check it through disk management, if not then try to update the driver in disk management. Before the drive is shown in disk management, it should be detected in disk management. |
