exteral hard drive partition died

hey dudes
bit of a problem.
I have a generic USB 500gb external hard that I use for my laptop. I devided the hard drive into 2 partitions dividing the hard drive in half: one partition for backup and one for data.
The data partition appears to be corrupted. The volume label on the data partition has gone and the size comes up as 0kb.
The backup partition still works fine so the disk itself isn't damaged.
Any ideas for recovery of the partition.
