Hi - I had hoped I would never have to experience a data lost and thought I took the necessary steps by backing up my data, but as it turns out my back up needed a back up. So, here it goes....

I have an external Western Digital Dual Option USB 2.0 drive that I used to back up all of my personal data - family pictures, files, etc... One day the drive was no longer recognized by Windows - both Vista and XP. I assumed the drive went bad, but it hasn't been exposed to high humidity, heat, cold, any elements that you would think could damage it due to the environment. I purchased a drive adaptor (Sabrent SUB 2.0 to SATA/IDE) from the local Fry's with the hopes it could help me transfer the data to a different HD. Unfortunately, Windows recognizes the added hardware and goes through the motions of installing drives. It even recognizes there is something there in Disk Management, but it says the drive isn't Initialized.

At this point I don't want to start clicking here and there and thought perhaps someone else could provide me with some suggestions. There are too many photos to just walk away. The local Best Buy said it would cost 100 to retrieve the data - not a bad price at all, but I am concerned as I don't have any experience with them. I think going forward, in addition to backing my data up to an external drive, I am going to utilize an offsite back system like Amazon.

Any suggestions at this point would be welcome. Thank you in advance.
