I was running utorrent, and just before bed, I went to shut down the computer, and it took ages to shutdown. So I forced shutdown the computer. The next morning, when I tried to turn on the computer, my primary HDD won't detect. I have two HDDs connected into my motherboard vis SATA, (not REID), the second HDD and my DVD rom(also SATA) are detected, but the one with OS (Windows XP) somehow won't detect. I have checked all the cables, swapped them with my secondary HDD, took it out and connected to my brother's comuter, even tried it on my portable casing via USB hub... Nothing.

I know the power is on, because, when I first start up the computer, the HDD will make a little running spinning noise for a second or so, and it vibrates when the power is on.

Is there anyway I can recover the data from this HDD?

The system I run is:

AMD 939 Opteron 175
Gigabyte GA-K8NMF-9 motherboard
Seagate SATA Barracuda 7200.11 1000GB (primary)
Seagate SATA Barracuda 750GB

Many thanks.

Seagate SATA Barracuda 7200.11 1000GB (primary)

...
Those drives have a known firmware bug that will prevent the drive from being detected on BIOS (either busy or LBA-0 problem).
If your data is critical send to a data recovery firm (with good reputation). There are data recovery firms that only use PC-3000 (and not their brains) and pc-3000 don't have a good support for this kind of drive, so you have to pick up a decent recovery firm.

Seagate also offer data recovery for those drives for free (on some cases) and of course they will replace the drive under guarantee. If data is not important and you don't mind seagate to have a it and be able to read it, just RMA the drive.

If you want a Do-It-Yourself sollution and if you are handy with electronic just read thois tuturial on how-to-fix your problem and when you have your drive working again just visit seagate site and upgrade your firmware to prevent the problem from happening again :

If you want to pay shipping to and from Portugal i can also fix your drive.
